Old Toyota Innova vs New Toyota Innova

Toyota has been building the iconic MUV Innova in India for over nearly a decade and it has successfully managed to get a stronghold over the premium crossover car segment in India. Toyota Innova is a people carrier and has brought plenty of features to the market. Toyota Innova continues to sell strongly despite having been around mostly unchanged for over 7 years that it has been around. Toyota has recently launched a new facelifted version of the Innova and we shall compare it to its predecessor and point out the features where the new one excels over the older Innova.

Looks and design:

Toyota Innova is a well designed MUV with its aggressive styling of its head lamps and tail lamps. It has an aggressive looking front with nicely designed grill, clear lens headlamps and fog lamps on the body colored bumpers. Toyota Innova has stylish side steps and looks macho and muscular when looked at from the side profile. It has a towering stature and its long wheelbase adds to the height and length of the car. Despite being largely untouched for 7 years the old Toyota Innova feels well built and the paint, fit and finish better than many competitors even today.

The new Toyota Innova brings new and interesting changes. It has new headlamp, bumper and fog lamp design. The rear of the car is nearly identical to the older Innova however there are subtle changes to the lights and the bumper and the tailgate has an embossed chrome garnish which reads “Innova”. It also brings integrated turn indicators on its rear view mirrors and the 10 spoke alloy wheels along with new side skirts that look sporty on this latest facelifted version of the popular multi-utility vehicle from Toyota.

Interiors – design, space and features:

Toyota Innova has some well designed interiors and very comfortable seats which provide excellent back support to the driver and all the passengers. Toyota Innova has dual tone elegant interior color, center wooden finish control panels, functional instrument console with MID, Optitron Combimeter with Illumination control, Tachometer and Tripmeter and other features such as the innovative front map lamp. Toyota Innova brings ample storage space throughout the car such as the overhead storage console and glove box apart from the very generous boot capacity of 620 liters of storage space.

The new Toyota Innova greets you as you open the door with its spacious cabin with the plastics finished in a lighter hue of beige and faux wood trimmings inside. It has new dual-tone seat covers all of which add to the premium feel of the facelifted Innova. The center console in the new Toyota Innova now features faux silver trim and the top VX variant gets a 6 inch 2 DIN touchscreen head-unit for audio, DVD, AUX+USB support and Bluetooth connectivity. You can operate these functions from the steering mounted controls. The addition of a reverse camera to the new Innova enhances the practicality of this multi-utility vehicle. The storage area remains largely unchanged and retains its large capacity of over 620 liters of baggage carrying capacity.

Engine – performance, power, torque, fuel economy, smoothness:

Toyota Innova has a proven track record for excellent engine performance from both its engine variants. It has a smooth and refined petrol and diesel engine options which keeps noise and vibrations to a manageable level. Toyota petrol engine is a 2.0 liter EFI unit which develops 130 BHP at 5600 RPM and 181 NM of torque at 4000 RPM. ARAI has certified the petrol engined Toyota Innova to deliver a fuel efficiency of 10.35 kmpl. Toyota Innova is also available in a diesel engine variant which develops 100 BHP at 3600 RPM and 200 NM of torque from 1400 RPM onwards. ARAI has rated Toyota Innova diesel to deliver a fuel economy of 12.99 kmpl.

The new Toyota Innova brings the same engine options and they remain largely unchanged from the older variant. Since it’s not an entirely new generation Innova the specifications for the petrol and diesel engine remains the same. Both the engine options offer excellent driveability and low vibes and noise levels. Excellent in city and highway performance from the engine makes the Innova an excellent family MUV. The power and fuel efficiency of the newer variants are similar to that of the outgoing model owing the same engine being carried forward in the newer model.

Suspension – Ride, comfort and handling:

Toyota Innova has proven to be a comfortable passenger car and brings very good ride quality and manages to glide over bad and bumpy roads with ease. The suspension is well tweaked and setup to suit the Indian road conditions and it shows as you drive this multi-utility vehicle. Toyota has done a wonderful job controlling the body roll on this huge car. Toyota Innova is very capable of handling triple digit speeds without throwing its passengers around and very easy to drive within the city. It also has safety features such as the ABS to ensure it will pull up to a stop without losing traction on its tyres.

The new Toyota Innova hasn’t been changed much in terms of drivability. It drives just as well as its predecessor. Since it’s a face lift and not an entirely new generation of Innova the ride quality remains unchanged and very plush and comfortable. It has a well weighted steering which allows you to steer it without tiring the driver. It is capable of cruising comfortably at triple digit speeds and manages to glide over bad pot holed roads. The suspension has been well setup and the chassis ensures excellent handling despite the size of the vehicle.

Value for money – sticker price, standard features:

The old Toyota came at a price of ex-showroom Delhi starting from 9.21 lakhs for the 8 seater base petrol variant Toyota Innova 2.0 G and the top petrol variant is priced at 12.14 lakhs for Toyota Innova 2.0 VX 8 Seater petrol. The diesel variant of Toyota Innova is priced from 8.48 lakhs for the base variant 8 seater diesel Toyota Innova 2.5 E Diesel MS and for the top variant 8 seater Toyota Innova 2.5 V is priced at 12.45 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi. The pricing was competitive and ensured success to the car as it was affordable given all its features and pricing made it good value for money.

The New Toyota Innova has been priced attractively keeping in mind the current market and all the features this multi-utility vehicle brings with it. It is now priced at an ex-showroom Delhi value of 9.78 lakhs for the 8 seater base petrol variant Toyota Innova 2.0 G and the top petrol variant is priced at 13.15 lakhs for Toyota Innova 2.0 VX 8 Seater petrol. The diesel variant of Toyota Innova is priced from 8.98 lakhs for the base variant 8 seater diesel Toyota Innova 2.5 E Diesel MS and for the top variant 8 seater Toyota Innova 2.5 VX Diesel is priced at 13.89 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi.

Verdict:

Toyota continues its tradition of building solid and reliable cars in India and continues to provide excellent service back and after sales experience. This has helped it sell numerous cars and get a strong footing in the market. The New Toyota Innova improves over its predecessor in many ways and is available at an attractive price tag as well. All this combined with the ownership experience makes owning a Toyota Innova worthwhile, especially if you are one with a big family then this is a fantastic car for the money that you pay for it.
