Maruti Alto 800 versus Hyundai Eon

Maruti launched their latest iteration of the popular Alto small hatchback. The newest version comes with more features and is already scaling up the sales charts for Maruti. We compare it with Hyundai’s small car Eon which has been a successful launch for Hyundai in the budget segment. Let’s see how both these cars fare against each other in our car comparison today.

Looks and design:

The new Maruti Alto 800 brings fresh new contemporary design and modern styling and updates the old Alto with fresh new looks. It has petal shaped headlamps with top mounted indicators and well styled grill which lends it an aggressive look despite being a small car. It has muscular looking wheel arches and large tail lamps high up on the rear end. The overall build quality, fit and finish is good on the Maruti Alto 800.

Hyundai Eon is a beautiful small car in the segment and comes with the fluidic design element of its bigger siblings. It has an eye catchy design with big headlamps, sporty trapezoidal looking fog lamp housing and huge bumper. It has cool looking allow wheels and an overall curvy design to it. Hyundai has ensured optimum build quality is maintained while the fit and finish is very good in the Hyundai Eon.

Interiors – design, space and features:

Maruti Alto 800 comes with a fully new interior design and brings two choice of interior color as well. It has a functional yet contemporary look to the dashboard and brings new look to the instrument panel. The air conditioning is very effective and there is plenty of leg room for taller passengers up front while the rear bench accommodates the passengers adequately.

Hyundai Eon gets very good interiors and the fit and finish inside is excellent for what is generally seen in a small car. It is very spacious and will seat four adults inside comfortably with plenty of leg and head room for passengers. It comes with air conditioning, CD/MP3 player and stylish center console panel. Eon sports MID and analog speedometer in the instrument panel and boot space of 215 liters for your luggage.

Engine – performance, power, torque, fuel economy, smoothness:

Maruti Alto 800 comes with a 796cc engine which produces 47 BHP at 6000 RPM and 69 NM of torque at 3500 RPM. It’s an easy to drive car and comes with a smoother engine and the gear level doesn’t vibrate as it does with the older Alto. It delivers a maximum fuel efficiency of 22.7 kmpl from the petrol engine variant as rated by ARAI.

Hyundai Eon brings an 814cc 3 cylinder petrol engine and produces a maximum power of 56 BHP at 5500 RPM and maximum torque of 76 NM at 4000 RPM and is mated to a 5 speed gearbox. It has excellent drivability and there is ample torque at low rpms for easy drive in the city. It has been rated to deliver 21.1 kmpl as per ARAI certification.

Suspension – Ride, comfort and handling:

Maruti Alto 800 brings a well tuned suspension and caters to masses looking for a comfortable small hatch to drive in the city. It has good road manners and handles well despite being shod with thin tyres. It has a comfortable ride quality and absorbs the undulations of the road quite well. It comes with power steering in the higher variants which offers good control and remains light to use in the city and at highway speeds.

Hyundai Eon has a comfortable suspension setup and it manages to offer a very good drive over bad and bumpy roads and cushions the bumps very well. It is an easy to drive car for new drivers and brings excellent brakes as well. It has quiet interiors and keeps the noise levels under control. The ground clearance of the Eon is adequate and will go over a sharp speed breaker without any issues.

Value for money – sticker price, standard features:

Maruti Alto 800 has been priced from (ex-showroom Delhi) 2.44 lakhs for the base Maruti Alto 800 Petrol, 2.76 lakhs for Maruti Alto 800 LX, 2.99 lakhs for Maruti Alto 800 LXI, Maruti Alto 800 LXI Airbag variant is priced at 3.10 lakhs. The pricing is seems to be spot on for the new Maruti Alto 800 and the cost of ownership is easy on the pocket which makes it a value for money purchase.

Hyundai has done a fantastic job with their feature packed Eon and it is selling it at an attractive (ex-showroom Delhi) price of 2.73 lakhs for the base variant Hyundai Eon D Lite, 3.16 lakhs for Hyundai Eon Era, Hyundai Eon Magna has been priced at 3.41 lakhs while the top end Hyundai Eon Sportz has been priced at 3.76 lakhs making every variant of the Hyundai Eon very good value for money.

Verdict:

It’s almost a battle between manufacturers now with two giants in the Indian auto industry pitting against each other for the turf in the entry level small hatch segment. Maruti Alto 800 is a fantastic new avatar over the outgoing Alto and given Maruti’s strong brand image has been raking in strong sales for the company. Hyundai isn’t far behind with their Eon infact it offers bang for buck with the list of features at price its selling the car and with the second largest sales and service network in the country they have ramped up their operations to cater to the masses.   3. After reading an article in economic times i do not believe anything Hyundai says. They have been caught red handed by EPA in USA. I wonder how many issues we will find in the Indian variants. When they say 21.1 kmpl, i do not trust them anymore.   4. Previously i had maruthi 800. now i am owner of eon. eon is far better vehicle compared to 800. everything of eon is perfect. In india we normally think of mileage. But eon is better in mileage also. my eon is giving around 17 in city and 19-20 on highway. so even mileage is also good. don’t run back on maruthi and definitely give a change to eon.

  5. The Hyundai Eon might just be a bit more powerful than the TATA Nano in the engine department but it certainly compromises on a smooth drive. Hit a speed of 80 and then your car starts to wobble. This is a big turn off.

  6. My TATA Nano certainly gives me quite a comfortable ride. It runs smoothly even on high speeds. Touching speeds of around 70 kmph isn’t much of a problem.
