Hyundai struck a new chord when it launched the Hyundai i10 in India. Sporty looks combined with great features made it a sure shot winner in the market. It replaced their former best seller Hyundai Santro as best selling Hyundai car in India. Funky new styling and modern looks appealed to the young crowd and people looking for a pretty looking hatchback decided on the i10. Today we compare the i10 with Maruti Wagon R and it has been a long favorite amongst Indian car buyers on a budget looking for a hatch. It has offered value in due its features and pricing and low cost of ownership resulting in a huge sales success for Maruti. Maruti Wagon R has often found itself a rival in Hyundai’s i10 and today we pitch both these cars against each other to find you the better one amongst them.
Looks and design:
Hyundai i10 is a great looking hatchback with its classy exteriors and sharp lines and contemporary styling. It looks very sporty and the styling gives a feel of a macho character to the car. It has body colored contoured bumpers and sporty grill which give it a mature stance and excellent road presence. The flared wheel arches and well designed rear add to the design elements. It has large headlamps and sharp looking rear tail lamps. It has excellent paint and finish quality and overall is a well constructed car from Hyundai stable. Special features include the sun roof and a rear spoiler which enhance the looks of the car.
Maruti WagonR is a well styled tall boy hatchback with a contemporary design and styling. It has a broad bumper and slightly flared wheel arches giving it a nice sporty look and it also has a well styled rear section with its slightly tall rear tail lamps which have been well designed. It has body colored bumpers with fog lamps and the sporty looking grill featuring the chromed Suzuki logo. The car has been well built and has very good quality of paint and finish.

Interiors – design, space and features:
Hyundai i10 has high quality interiors with its dual tone dashboard and boasts good built quality. It has spacious cabin space which gives a airy feel to the car and seats which are very comfortable and give excellent body support. Hatchback i10 includes features such height adjust driver seats, keyless entry, reverse parking sensors, stereo music system with steering mounted controls, electronic climate control, Air bags for safety has also been included. Hyundai i10 also features ample storage space throughout the car and sports a 225 liter boot space to carry your luggage.
Maruti WagonR is featured packed outside and inside with its quality interiors which are both roomy and spacious. It has seats which are very comfortable and ample cabin room for tall passengers who want to stretch their legs a bit. It offers chrome tipped instrument panel which improved interior ambience and comes with air conditioning, stereo music system and a dual tone dashboard of acceptable quality level. It has ample storage space to store all your knick knacks in its luggage parcel tray and sun visor and spacious boot to carry your luggage. It also includes head rests for front and rear passengers and adequate back and thigh support for increased driver and passenger comfort.

Engine – performance, power, torque, fuel economy, smoothness:
Hyundai i10 sports a new 1.2 liter VTVT engine mated to a 5 speed gearbox and produces 79 BHP at 6000 RPM and 112 NM of torque at 4000 RPM. The new engine has improved refinement levels and is an excellent car to drive and has ample amount of power owing to the new engine. It has incredible low end torque which makes it a pleasure to drive around in the city and on the highways. ARAI has certified this car to deliver an excellent fuel economy of 20.36 kmpl. This engine is a favorite amongst enthusiast and allows the driver some high spirited driving moments making it a great car to drive anywhere.
Maruti WagonR is powered by a 1.0 liter KB-series petrol engine mated to a 5 speed gearbox and develops 67 BHP at 6200 RPM and 77 NM of Torque at 3500 RPM. This is an all aluminium engine which is light weight and has very low vibration which enhances the Wagon ride quality by keeping the noise levels low and ARAI has certified the Maruti WagonR to deliver an excellent fuel efficiency of 18.9 kmpl. The car has ample power to take all its passengers and chug along in the city and maintain very good speeds on the highway.

Suspension – Ride, comfort and handling:
Hyundai i10 has a small turning radius and that makes it easy to maneuver in the city. The ride quality is quite plush and comfortable over bad roads and bumps. The car has been endowed with a well tuned suspension for the city drives and highway blasts and is quite stable owing to its rigid chassis which allows for spirited driving around corners and stability at high speeds on highways. Even though it has a slightly taller stance the body roll is minimized and ABS does a fantastic job when it comes to the braking department and allows the car to slowly down quickly from pace. The new i10 is a fantastic car and joy to drive thanks to excellent feedback and a well weighted steering which ensures driver comfort at all times.
Maruti WagonR is a great city hatchback with tall boy box type looks. However, it handles extremely well and has minimal amounts of body roll which is well controlled at all times. Wagon R offers very good ride quality over bad city roads and bumpy road surfaces. It is not a car which you can driver hard around corners buts it’s a car that is well behaved on highways when you are on a drive with your family and when you take it up curvy mountain roads. It has decent amount of feedback from its typically Maruti, light steering which actually helps the driver in long traffic jams. Maruti Wagon R comes with ABS which has been well calibrated and aids in driver controlling the car from speed and allowing it smoothly slow down to a stop without locking any of its wheels.

Hyundai i10 has endless features especially some which only found in higher segment cars which makes it a top hatchback to buy today. It has been reasonably priced by Hyundai and the price range starts from (ex-showroom Delhi) 3.54 lakhs for the base variant Hyundai i10 D-Lite and the top variant Hyundai i10 Asta AT is priced at 5.95 lakhs. Hyundai has succeeded in pricing the car very well and hence has resulted in the car selling extremely well with the Indian customers who looking to get the most for their money.
Maruti WagonR is a excellent value for money car not only because it brings great value to the customers in terms of fuel efficiency, brand value and most importantly low maintenance costs and the killer price tag of (ex-showroom Delhi) 3.35 lakhs for the base variant Maruti WagonR LXi going up to 4.20 lakhs for the Wagon R VXi with ABS. Maruti has been successful with every one of its launches and Wagon R has proven itself as a great family car over the years.

Hyundai i10 has the looks and the features that most would be looking for in a hatch combined with good pricing and good fuel economy. It is an excellent car to buy and serves the need for anyone looking to buy a modern hatchback at great value. Wagon R from India’s largest car manufacturer is a great buy, it comes with good number of features and great fuel economy and the Maruti batch gives it superior resale value as well and is overall cheaper to maintain.
