Skoda India had been known till date for its diesel sedans like the Laura and the Superb. However, the Czech giant decided to test new waters by rolling out a different kind of vehicle - its all-wheel drive soft-roader, the Yeti. It also marks a new beginning for Skoda in the Indian SUV market and packs in enough features and gizmos to entice and attract customers looking in the Rs 14-20 lakh SUV bracket. Is it worth the dough? Bunny Punia shares his verdict with you.

Skoda Yeti Diesel Interiors

If you have been used to the Laura’s interiors, the Yeti’s insides will be a familiar and luxury place to be. There is hardly any difference in the design and quality of the fascia, or the steering, or the speedometer console. While there are two trim levels on offer, the Ambiente and the Elegance, the one you see on these pages is the later one with all the bells and whistles. The music system also comes with a large display area which doubles up as assistance with the Parktronic system. The quality of interiors is top notch and the Yeti can hold its own very well in the company of Rs 14 to Rs 22 lakh soft-roaders easily. Space isn’t an issue and both the front and rear rows can seat hefty, well built and tall adults with ease. The steering is adjustable for reach and rake, the driver’s seat is manually adjustable for almost every need and last but not the least, the back seats are configurable in various ways for added practicality. Though the Yeti is only 4.2 meters in length, its boot space, at 416litres with the second row in place and as much as 1665litres with the seats removed is simply put, outstanding! You also get the same kind of practicality as on any Skoda and a lot more. For example, the Yeti has what the company calls as Varioflex space management. Simply put, the rear seats can be folded in various configurations as well as removed to liberate space enough to shame bigger and more expensive SUVs out there. The boot also offers luggage restraint nets and hooks for holding big shopping bags too. The front centre armrest comes with an added surprise - a specially designed storage space beneath it. This jumbo box also has the ability to cool the contents in it. Nice touch! Safety is top notch with six airbags as standard.

Skoda Yeti Diesel Exteriors

The Yeti is every bit of a Skoda that you and I know of, and then more. For many, it might be the weirdest model from the Czech manufacturer in India when it comes to aesthetics but for me, it does look bold, if not beautiful. Wearing the family badge prominently on the familiar front, what makes the Yeti stand out are its big fog lamps which are functional as well with their corner function automatically illuminating the space the car is about to turn into. The Yeti also rides higher than its other siblings in the Indian market and at 4.2 meters in length, looks quite compact with somewhat aggressive design angles. The running roof rails along with the rear view mirror integrated indicators add to the sporty touch. At the rear, the twin exhausts along with the finely crafted bash plate look great though I would have personally loved a single outlet for the gases on each ends. The Yeti runs on wide 215mm tyres mounted on chunky 16-spoke alloy wheels. The spare one however, as I found out at the end of my 1300km trip, isn’t the regular size. It is a true space saver wheel, which means it also comes with a restrictive driving speed of 80km/h.

Skoda Yeti Diesel Engine & Performance

The 51km stretch to Rohtang Pass is a tourist hideout and if you there on a weekend, be prepared for traffic jams! To our luck, it had snowed the night before but that also meant the roads weren’t open all the way. After the first few kilometres, the real ascent started and this is where the Yeti’s 140bhp 2.0TDI engine, also seen on other models in India, showed its prowess. Infact, the 320Nm of torque from as low as 1750rpm does the talking and this along with the slick gearbox meant our progress was quick. This is one of the best 2-litre diesel engines in India and is the perfect blend of power, torque and performance! It does sound like a proper diesel when cold but on the move with the windows rolled up, NVH or noise, vibration, harshness levels are pretty impressive. Further, it is extremely efficient, and owners will easily get 12-13kmpl city usage.

Skoda Yeti Diesel Diesel Mileage

The 1.9 litre diesel engine offers an ARAI mileage of around 17 kmpl. While driving in a real life situation one can expect a mileage of around 15 kmpl. The SUV has four cylindered engine under the hood.  

Skoda Yeti Diesel Handling Braking & Safety

It does feel like an overgrown sedan to drive and this isn’t a bad thing. Ofcourse you don’t get an ego boost with a ‘view from the sky’ driving position but what you get is a comfortable and commanding driving posture. Steering is well weighed, brakes terrific and overall handling good enough to keep similar priced sedans in view on a twisted section. Infact, with its intelligent 4x4 system and ESP safety, driving in a spirited manger on curvy roads inspires confidence. The Yeti has been designed around Volkswagen’s A5 platform (the A5’s PQ35 is shared by Jetta and Laura too) and it shows.In safety you get ABS, ASR and ESP. The Yeti also has six airbags.

Skoda Yeti Diesel Comfort & Suspension

I repeatedly drove the vehicle at speeds of over 150km/h on the straights of NH-1 and found high speed stability to be spot on. Infact, on the way back to Delhi while running short on time to catch a flight to Mumbai, the Yeti turned out to be one hell of a fast companion, covering 550km from Manali, including 250km of hills, in ten hours! The broken patches of NH-21 were dismissed off without much drama however, at speeds, sharp undulations did make their presence felt easily. But I guess this is a small price to pay for the kind of terrains the Yeti can comfortable traverse through. Worthy of a mention is the Yeti’s sub 5 metre turning radius which turned out to be a boon while negotiating Manali’s congested inner roads one fine night!

The Skoda Yeti will be available as a 4WD model which means that this SUV will be suitable also for off-roading so that it can traverse rough terrain, and it will also have a feature that helps it drive on mountain roads. Moreover, Skoda has improved the suspension of the car to meet the harsh demands of Indian roads and off-roading challenges on Indian terrain. Skoda calls the car as a rough road package for Indian customers. SKODA YETI is Worst Product

Pros Exterior & fuel economy is good

Cons AC is very bad

I have purchased a new SKODA Elegance this year and i found that AC is not working properly resulting cabin temprature is to high. Engine power & Clutch system is inadequate and you will not find driving pleaser. It is very bad experience with skoda vehicals. i never suggest to any one to buy any skoda new vehical.

the car is a superb by interior but i guess skoda has forgotten how to design a suv . as driven before it has a fuel ecconmy of 17.4 which is the best in this seggment . but the space and looks arent up to the mark with having comparisson with the suv in this seggmet it has a beatufil interiors and is a must buy in this seggemnt .
