Renault Duster Variants
Editorial Test Drive Review of Renault Duster
The Duster is an extremely important model for Renault to be a success in India. It is Renault's fourth model in India and launched in 2012, it has met with a huge response. In pictures it looks much bigger than its 4.3 metre length and thanks to many details it looks like a pure SUV. Details like the big flared wheel arches, roof rails, 16 inch alloys and squared off styling. Renault have done some minute changes to make it look plusher compared to the Duster’s available in rest of the world. The front is simple with a big chrome finished Renault grille and square head lamps while the more sculpted rear looks more appealing with its big Duster badging. The interior is conservative yet cheerful and spacious. The dashboard is clutter free and when it comes to space the headroom and legroom are excellent. Passengers at the rear will find the seats comfy and providing excellent headroom and legroom. Storage is also taken care off with a big glove-box, plethora of cup-holders and an adequate 475 litre boot. There are three engine choices- two diesels and one petrol.
The petrol is a 1.6-litre unit generating 102bhp of power @ 5850 RPM. While it will score on smoothness, refinement and low initial cost, it goes without saying that the diesel engines will sell like hot cakes- the one to watch out for and certainly a potential best-seller is the 84Bhp mid-level oil-burner variant. It is the similar to 1.5-litre K9K powerplant and Renault is offering it in two different avatars. You get 84bhp @ 4750 RPM and the other more powerful one makes 109bhp @ 3900 RPM on the top end version. figures- 20.46 kmpl and 19.01 kmpl for the diesels and 13.24 kmpl for the petrol. The suspension manages to be comfortable without being too soft to spoil the handling dynamics. The electro-hydraulic steering does feel a bit heavy at times and the stitching on the wheel can become reason for injury. The handling and ride are class benchmarks now and blows away other similarly priced rivals. The stability at high speeds is decent too! Duster in three trim levels, RxE, RxL and RxZ. Mind you the 102bhp petrol and the 84bhp diesel will only be available in the RxE and RxL variants, while the top of the line RxZ will come only in the 109bhp diesel. The starting price of Rs 7.19 lakh ex-showroom for the base petrol variant to 11.2akhs for the top diesel variant (ex-showroom). The top version is loaded with features like USB/AUX and Bluetooth. The equipment levels on the Duster are very good as you also get keyless entry, ABS with Brake Assist & EBD, dual front Airbags, satellite Audio & phone control, rear defogger, rear wiper & washer, electrically adjustable ORVMs, rear parking sensors, rear AC and leather upholstery. This is an SUV that is all about value and the sales figures show that how we were starved for a decent SUV that also drives well and looks good. For a detailed analysis read below.
Pros: Competitive price, Proper SUV looks, Excellent ride, Frugal diesel engine, Good space, Very good build quality, Rear AC vent (top model)
Cons: Interiors feel basic, Conservative styling, No proper 3rd row seats, Lacks some features, Ergonomic quirks
Renault Duster Interiors
Renault has played it safe here – just like the exterior, the interior is conservative yet cheerful and spacious. There is no futuristic styling here and instead you get a functional and practical instrument design. When it comes to space the headroom and legroom are excellent. Passengers at the rear will find the seats comfy and providing excellent headroom and legroom. Storage is also taken care off with a big glove-box, plethora of cup-holders and an adequate 475 litre boot.
Renault Duster Interiors Details
Renault Duster Boot space
The boot of the Duster is fairly capacious and can gobble-up your weekend luggage easily. The 475 litre capacity boot gets a flat floor since the spare wheel has been stored underneath the body shell. The rear seats however don't fold flat.
Renault Duster Speedometer
The instrument console has large chrome polished dials akin to SUV and is illuminated in red. It sports analogue speedometer, tachometer, fuel level and consumption and a digital display in the center.
Renault Duster Gear lever
The gear lever is a bit stubborn like the steering. The gear lever is big and its well designed chrome tipped.
Renault Duster Cup holders
The Renault Duster has two Cup holders in the centre console just in front of the gear lever.
Renault Duster Exteriors
Chunky, muscular and looking every inch an SUV- that’s the Duster for you! Overall this is a proper old school SUV with modern touches that will surely have a large fan following!
Renault Duster Exteriors Details
Renault Duster Front design
The front fascia of the Duster renders it with good road presence. The chrome treatment to grille makes it look much more premium. The twin-pod headlights may look a bit unconventional. Renault Duster horizontal grille is held by a pair of double optics headlamps. Renault Duster is quite lengthy according to the trend of crossover SUVs and do not qualify the sub-4 meter excise levy. A sleek body color bumper in the front gives way to black plastic cladding which houses round fog lamps on either
Renault Duster Rear design
The rear side is marked by a curvy boot lid, skid plate, vertically placed tail lamps with D-Shaped curve alongside, high mount stop lamp, hexagonal windshield (having six sides) with a rear viper, Renault badge and reflectors. The boot lip opener has a Duster written plate over it. Just below it is the number plate. The rear bumper is also not very wide but is painted in body color.
Renault Duster Side profile
The side profile is the most interesting one with lot of contours. The beltline is very sharply cut. Body color door handles, wing mirrors, fuel lid can be seen. The two windows are followed by a quarter glasses though no third row is present inside. The most noticeable part is the wheel arches which are very prominently seamed. Under the large wheel arches are the large 16 inch alloy wheels.
Renault Duster Ground Clearance
A maximum ground clearance of 205 mm is enough to go over tough terrain and standing water. You don't have to worry about seriously potholed roads when you're at the wheel of the Duster.
Renault Duster Engine & Performance
When it comes to transmission the petrol will have available with the five-speed gearbox only while the 84bhp Duster will have a five speed gearbox and the 109bhp one will have a six speed gearbox. The 109bhp diesel will be our pick for performance freaks and should easily give the Duster best in class acceleration, top speed and fuel economy.
