Editorial Test Drive Review of Renault Duster

The Duster is an extremely important model for Renault to be a success in India. It is Renault's fourth model in India and launched in 2012, it has met with a huge response. In pictures it looks much bigger than its 4.3 metre length and thanks to many details it looks like a pure SUV. Details like the big flared wheel arches, roof rails, 16 inch alloys and squared off styling. Renault have done some minute changes to make it look plusher compared to the Duster’s available in rest of the world. The front is simple with a big chrome finished Renault grille and square head lamps while the more sculpted rear looks more appealing with its big Duster badging. The interior is conservative yet cheerful and spacious. The dashboard is clutter free and when it comes to space the headroom and legroom are excellent. Passengers at the rear will find the seats comfy and providing excellent headroom and legroom. Storage is also taken care off with a big glove-box, plethora of cup-holders and an adequate 475 litre boot. There are three engine choices- two diesels and one petrol.

The petrol is a 1.6-litre unit generating 102bhp of power @ 5850 RPM. While it will score on smoothness, refinement and low initial cost, it goes without saying that the diesel engines will sell like hot cakes- the one to watch out for and certainly a potential best-seller is the 84Bhp mid-level oil-burner variant. It is the similar to 1.5-litre K9K powerplant and Renault is offering it in two different avatars. You get 84bhp @ 4750 RPM and the other more powerful one makes 109bhp @ 3900 RPM on the top end version. figures- 20.46 kmpl and 19.01 kmpl for the diesels and 13.24 kmpl for the petrol. The suspension manages to be comfortable without being too soft to spoil the handling dynamics. The electro-hydraulic steering does feel a bit heavy at times and the stitching on the wheel can become reason for injury. The handling and ride are class benchmarks now and blows away other similarly priced rivals. The stability at high speeds is decent too! Duster in three trim levels, RxE, RxL and RxZ. Mind you the 102bhp petrol and the 84bhp diesel will only be available in the RxE and RxL variants, while the top of the line RxZ will come only in the 109bhp diesel. The starting price of Rs 7.19 lakh ex-showroom for the base petrol variant to 11.2akhs for the top diesel variant (ex-showroom).  The top version is loaded with features like  USB/AUX and Bluetooth. The equipment levels on the Duster are very good as you also get keyless entry, ABS with Brake Assist & EBD, dual front Airbags, satellite Audio & phone control, rear defogger, rear wiper & washer, electrically adjustable ORVMs, rear parking sensors, rear AC and leather upholstery. This is an SUV that is all about value and the sales figures show that how we were starved for a decent SUV that also drives well and looks good. For a detailed analysis read below.

Renault Duster Exteriors

Chunky, muscular and looking every inch an SUV- that’s the Duster for you! Overall this is a proper old school SUV with modern touches that will surely have a large fan following!

What we like

What we don't like

It does not have the presence of a SUV and the design is basic and lacks futuristic styling.

Renault Duster Front design

The front fascia of the Duster renders it with good road presence. The chrome treatment to grille makes it look much more premium. The twin-pod headlights may look a bit unconventional. Renault Duster horizontal grille is held by a pair of double optics headlamps. Renault Duster is quite lengthy according to the trend of crossover SUVs and do not qualify the sub-4 meter excise levy. A sleek body color bumper in the front gives way to black plastic cladding which houses round fog lamps on either

Renault Duster Rear design

The rear side is marked by a curvy boot lid, skid plate, vertically placed tail lamps with D-Shaped curve alongside, high mount stop lamp, hexagonal windshield (having six sides) with a rear viper, Renault badge and reflectors. The boot lip opener has a Duster written plate over it. Just below it is the number plate. The rear bumper is also not very wide but is painted in body color.

Renault Duster Side profile

The side profile is the most interesting one with lot of contours. The beltline is very sharply cut. Body color door handles, wing mirrors, fuel lid can be seen. The two windows are followed by a quarter glasses though no third row is present inside. The most noticeable part is the wheel arches which are very prominently seamed. Under the large wheel arches are the large 16 inch alloy wheels.

Renault Duster Ground Clearance

A maximum ground clearance of 205 mm is enough to go over tough terrain and standing water. You don't have to worry about seriously potholed roads when you're at the wheel of the Duster.

Renault Duster Bumpers

Renault Duster have a sleek body color bumper the Bumpers are quite cool and sporty looking feature among the other sporty looking features of this SUV.

Renault Duster Head lamps

The front lights of the Duster get a twin-pod treatment. The turn signals are take the top most part of the headlamp cluster. Fog lamps are integrated into the front bumper. The rear lights also feature reflective clear lense surfaces.

Renault Duster Tail lamps

Renault Duster has vertically placed tail lamps with D-Shaped curve alongside, which gives it a sporty look.

Renault Duster Fog lamps

A sleek body color bumper in the front gives way to black plastic cladding which houses round fog lamps on either side.

Renault Duster Tyres

16 inch wheels come standard on the Duster with the top-end variants getting alloys of similar diameter. The 215/65 R16 MRF Wanderer tyres come standard and offer decent grip under all driving conditions.

Renault Duster Alloy wheels

Renault Duster will be equipped with large size wheels that will give it a perfect SUV look. Thus 16 inch alloy/steel wheels are incorporated in Duster for better gripping and stability. The alloy wheels nut-cover comes with anti-theft key.

Renault Duster Outside mirrors

The Renault Duster possesses two sporty looking nice outside wing mirrors.

Renault Duster Colors

The Renault Duster is available in the following colour options- Pearl Supreme White, Pearl Galaxy Black, Metallic Moonlight Silver, Metallic Graphite Grey, Metallic Fiery Red, Metallic Woodland Brown.

Renault Duster Rear wiper

The Renault Duster has 1 small Rear Wiper.

Renault Duster Roof rails

Renault Duster has roof rails which add a sporty look and style to the SUV.

Renault Duster Sun roof

Renault Duster doesnt have this option.

Renault Duster Spoiler

Renault Duster doesnt have this option.

Renault Duster Side Steps

As a SUV the Renault Duster has side step which makes the side profile of the SUV look quite good.

Renault Duster Spare wheel

Spare wheel space is there at the back boot of Renault Duster.

Renault Duster Comfort & Suspension

The Duster is a 2 wheel drive only and its ride comfort is the best in its class. The front suspension of the Duster is MacPherson-type with rectangular lower wishbone and anti-roll bar and the rear is programmed-deflection Rear suspension flexible beam and coil springs. The refinment is also class best.

What we like

The ride of the Duster is class best and so is the refinement, it is comfy and goes over bad roads very well.

What we don't like

The low speed ride quality could be better.

Suspension System of Renault Duster

Renault Duster Comfort

The Duster's suspension setup allows for a very decent level of comfort. The seats are supportive and the SUV glides over potholes without breaking sweat. The rear seat with its separate cooling makes for a great place to enjoy the journey.

Renault Duster Front suspension

McPherson type front suspension with anti-roll bar render the high-riding SUV with decent handling characteristics.

Renault Duster Rear suspension

Torsion beam axle with coil springs and anti-roll allow the Duster to glide over bumps. The ride is comfortable without being too bumpy. We put the suspension to test and were amazed by the results. The Duster copes extremely well with broken road surfaces.

Renault Duster Engine & Performance

When it comes to transmission the petrol will have available with the five-speed gearbox only while the 84bhp Duster will have a five speed gearbox and the 109bhp one will have a six speed gearbox. The 109bhp diesel will be our pick for performance freaks and should easily give the Duster best in class acceleration, top speed and fuel economy. Speaking of mileage, here are the figures- 20.46 kmpl and 19.01 kmpl for the diesels and 13.24 kmpl for the petrol.

What we like

The 109 bhp diesel is the best engine as it giives the Duster enough performance and torque in the city use and highway use.

What we don't like

The petrol lacks bottom end performance and the 84 bhp diesel too feels a tad underpowered.

1.5 dCi Diesel Engine of Renault Duster

Renault Duster Acceleration

The Renault Duster Diesel will accelerate from 0-100 Kmph in mere 11.8 seconds approximately.

Renault Duster Top speed

The Top speed of Diesel duster is 164 Kmph approximately.

Renault Duster In-gear acceleration

Renault Duster SUV is offered with a very good in-gear accelerations that can touch between 40-60 Kmph very soon to give the drive a comfortable overtaking.

Renault Duster Gearbox

The gearbox slots in perfectly and the ratios too are well sorted out for both highway cruising as well as city driving. Renault Duster comes with 1.5 dCi diesel engine that has been taken from Nissan Micra and comes coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox in diesel variant RxE and 84bhp RxL and six speed manual gearbox

Renault Duster Power

The 110 PS diesel engine is the best performer among all other variants. The 85 PS version though is much more economical while the petrol with 104 PS performs fairly decently as well.

Renault Duster Torque

The 1.5 dCi motor in higher tune generates a peak torque of 248 Nm @ 2250 rpm. The lower-spec version generates 200 Nm @ 1900 rpm with very little turbo-lag. The petrol engine on the other hand produces 145 Nm @ 3750 rpm

Renault Duster NVH levels

The car is well insulated front exterior noise. The diesel clutter can be heard inside the cabin but overall it does not spoil the joy of driving the Duster.

Renault Duster Handling Braking & Safety

Duster comes with  disc brakes in front and drum brakes at the rear. Thus the Duster stops well and it has good braking performance. When it comes to safety the the Duster comes with ABS, emergency brake assist.  Duster also has driver and passenger airbags. The Duster comes with 2 wheel drive only and has a monocoque chassis which gives it good handling for an SUV.

What we like

The Duster handles well  and has less body roll than its rivals.

What we don't like

The steering is too light and does not give confidence.

Renault Duster Handling

The Duster handles extremely well when the going gets twisty. You never feel like you're at the wheel of a SUV for the sedan like handling. Although, there is a hint of body roll but that doesn't spoil the experience of driving the SUV at all.

Renault Duster Braking performance

Front disc brakes and drums at the rear offer decent braking performance. For the large proportions of the vehicle, braking is well sorted out. There is a hint of understeer when you push the car over a certain limit though.

Renault Duster Safety features

System like Anti-lock braking kick-in at the right moment to keep the car on the road. Driver and passenger airbags help keep the occupants safe in an event of a crash.

Renault Duster ABS

Renault Duster has ABS.

Renault Duster Traction control

Renault Duster doesnt have this feature.

Renault Duster Mileage and Running Costs

The 109bhp diesel is our pick for performance freaks as it gives the Duster best in class acceleration, top speed and fuel economy. Speaking of mileage, here are the figures- 20.46 kmpl and 19.01 kmpl for the diesels and 13.24 kmpl for the petrol. The petrol is least efficient but the 84 bhp diesel is the most efficient with the 109 bhp diesel in between.
