India's largest motor manufacturer Maruti Udyog Limited started as a 50-50 JV between Suzuki of Japan and Maruti of India. It was established in February 1981 and started production in 1983. The company's first product Maruti 800 turned out to be a best seller and remained the market leader for a long time. Only recently Alto, another of company's offerings, took over the sales of Maruti 800. In spite of the stiff competition of late in the Indian market, Maruti continues to be the leader. Collapse
