Expert Test Drive Review

Maruti DZire Front View

Maruti launched the new DZire in Feb 2015 and it is expected to continue to set the sales charts on fire. The original DZire was launched on 26th March 2008 and simply put, was the Swift hatchback with an added boot and a wee bit of extra rear passenger space. A Maruti product with a diesel engine at a competitive price meant sure shot success for the sedan. The new DZire gets minor exterior styling changes, a whole lot of new equipment and tweaked engines.

The front end is all-new, like the new Swift which was launched in November 2014, though the radiator grille and bumper are slightly different from its hatchback sibling. Inside the DZire continues with the dual-tone treatment which makes the cabin look premium and spacious, unlike the all-black interiors of the hatchback. The faux wood strip on the front doors as well as below the side air-con vents up front looks premium. The new DZire has a longer wheelbase than the hatchback which liberates more leg and knee room.
Further, the back-rest is reclined and the rear of the front seat scooped. All these changes add up to more space at the back. The 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine (basically the Fiat MultiJet engine) and the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol motor have been tweaked, making them even more efficient without a huge compromise on performance. According to ARAI, the diesel motor has an efficieny figure of 26.59 km/l as compared to 23.4km/l earlier! The petrol engine, as per ARAI, has an efficiency of 20.85 km/l now as compared to the pre-facelift model which delivered 19.1km to a litre. The Swift DZire is a well planted car, one which feels matured to drive, with the drive feel similar to cars much above its own category. Prices start at Rs 5.03 lakh and go up to 7.59 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi. It is a great car and has brilliant value. Detailed analysis below.

Maruti DZire Interiors Side View

The Swift DZire has a lovely cabin design. The dual-tone black-and-beige interiors help give the car a premium look and make it feel airy, even though the small windows do not let in a lot of light. The faux wood strip on the front doors as well as below the side air-con vents up front looks premium. The moment you sit in to the driver's seat, the soft padding is evident. The driver's seat is a nice place to be and ergonomically the DZire is one of the better cars around. I especially liked the silver inserts in the steering wheel and around the central air-con vents.
Once it gets dark, the orange-red background lightning for the speedometer console looks fab! The overall quality of interiors is pretty good considering the price the car sells for. The top end model comes as loaded as the Swift hatchback – steering wheel controls with telephony controls, automatic climate control, good sounding audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, Keyless-entry with Start/Stop button is a new feature, electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs and those lovely cup-holders in the front of the side vents make life easier. This feature will come in very handy during the North Indian summers! Another place where the new DZire scores is the space for back-seat passengers as well as the comfort factor. You immediately notice the softer seats which is a boon for chauffer driven tired souls or the elderly in the house.
The new DZire also has a longer wheelbase which liberates more leg and knee room. Further, the back-rest is inclined more and the rear of the front seat scooped. All these changes add up to more space at the back. Finally, even with a 6-foot driver up front, there is decent space at the rear for normal sized adults. However, the new DZire simply cannot match up to the likes of the Toyota Etios, Tata Zest and Hyundai Xcent in this department. Infact, similarly priced hatchbacks like the Hyundai i20 beat the new DZire as far as passenger space is concerned. Another limitation of the new DZire is the boot space, which is small compared to the Hyundai Xcent, and holds just 316 litres. The boot is best for a couple of medium sized suit cases for a weekend trip.

What we like
The overall quality of interiors is pretty good considering the price the car sells for. The top end model comes loaded with features.
What we don't like
The boot space could have been better.

Maruti DZire Front View

It might not be the prettiest looking sedan in the segment, but that said, from various angles, it does look sporty.

The front end is all-new, like the new Swift, though the radiator grille and bumper are slightly different from its hatchback sibling. The headlamps are blacked out, the grille gets a single chrome bar which may look tacky to some, the fog-lampo housing gets a chrome bezel and there are new alloy wheels. From the rear three quarters, the new DZire does look odd but not to the extent of calling it ugly. See the back end of the car standing 20 feet away and you actually find it good enough with the horizontally running chrome strip adding to the 'premium' feel. The new DZire is sold in three trim levels for the petrol (and a AT version in VXi trim) and two trim levels for the diesel. The lower LDi / LXi / LXi (O) / VXi / VDi versions wear thin 165/80 tyres on 14-inch steel wheels while the higher ZDi / ZXi models wear wider 185/65 tyres on 15-inch alloy wheels. The new DZire is sold in seven colour options.

FIAT's much acclaimed 1.3-litre Multi-jet engine is used by various companies in the world and India too. However, it is Maruti who have made the best use of this fantastic unit. For starters, the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) levels are well under control and the engine feels very smooth. Within the first few minutes, you also discover that Maruti has tuned the engine and recalibrated the turbo-charger for lower turbo-lag.

The diesel DZire is a much better companion at low engine speeds, however, it can still not match up to the Nissan Sunny or the Toyota Etios in this regard. That said, once on the boil, the engine comes into its own and the car is a hoot to drive fast. The petrol engine is the same used on the earlier Dzire though with changes. The intake gets variable valve technology and Maruti has tuned the engine for efficiency. This is evident by the fact that as per ARAI, the new petrol Dzire runs 20.85 km to a litre. Drive the petrol version and you are impressed by it smooth and rev-happy nature. It continues to be a gem of a motor and Maruti is now offering the petrol engine with a choice of a 4-speed automatic transmission.
While some may run the Dzire AT down for being 'just' a 4-speed one, the fact is that it works just fine in city traffic. It is geared tall for fuel economy but goes about doing its duty in an able manner. Drive the car with a light right foot and the system up-shifts quickly to 4th. Stomp the accelerator hard and it down-shifts quickly for extra performance. You don’t get the same punch as from the manual version no doubt but on the good side, the system has an overdrive lock (to prevent it from shifting into 4th) as well as selectable 1st, 2nd and 3rd cogs.

What we like
The diesel and petrol both offer excellent performance without sacrificing economy.
What we don't like
The automatic gearbox is slow and hampers driving experience.

In the Dzire ventilated Disc brakes are for the front and drum brakes are used for the rear. The front suspension is of McPherson strut with coil spring and rear suspension is of torsion beam with coil spring which is the same as the Swift hatchback. When it comes to safety it has front dual SRS airbags, ELR seatbelts plus Anti-Lock Braking System and Brake Assist with EBD.

What we like
The high-speed stability is good
What we don't like
Sharp bumps can unsettle the car

Based on the new Swift platform, the driving feel is one of the best in the segment. The car has a long wheelbase and wide track – two essential things for stability. You get a feel of a well planted car, one which feels matured to drive, with the feeling of being from a higher segment.A massive improvement has been the ride quality which is now up there with the best in the class. The suspension, as compared to the Swift hatchback, feels softer which is a good thing as the new Dzire is targeted at family car buyers. It rides very nicely over bad roads and undulations. Further, drive the car hard and it holds ground very well without losing composure. Steering effort is minimal and the electronic power steering unit is light at low speeds and becomes devoid of any assist at high speeds for better feedback.

What we like
Soft and supple suspensio
What we don't like
Ride quality still not best in cla

Pros great mileage expected because of fiat ddsi engine which is proven in swift and palio style

Cons leg room in rear seats, two in one car

At the price the diesel versions are launched, it is a steal.Very good pickup, good ac, best of features in top end zdi make it a formidable and unbeatable car of this era.U will never feel u are driving a diesel car. (likes of indigo, logan and even 1.4 petrol fiesta can beaten in a giffy). High torque at low rpm is good for city driving. The only thing not so good is its a 2 in 1 car, ie., swift from the front and sx4 from the back. Its just cut & paste of the front half of swift and rear half of sx4. Probably suzuki was in a hurry to launch the entry level sedan after deciding to withdraw esteem. They could have contoured the body like verna or fiesta, or else continued the sporty look of front at the rear also.

Swift Dzire the ugliest car
Posted on 18 Dec 09 at 2:16 pm

Pros Non

Cons Ugly looking

Hi all, This is the ugliest thing ever runs Indian roads by Maruti as per product design. Thanks to the so called designers at Maruti, How really made the Swifts backside extended which looks a tank. And the rear curves hardly blend into the boot. Even a school going kid to draw a car he will come up with the better design and good looking car than Swift Sedan (Dzire). Just adding the boot space does not make it a sedan. Thats way Esteems simple and good look makes more difference than ugliest. And finally all those how say good about DZIre perfomance than it is rubbish. Esteem is giving same from for those how dont know. For tham maruti has just put the same petrol esteem engine (2005 and above) esteem (petrol engine, 4 stroke cycle all aluminim SOHC 4cylinder 1298cc, 32 bit EMC) in Dzire. Just chack the Spcifications of esteem and Dzire. Also about mileage a 2005 above esteem gives 14 to 15 Kml on highways. Any way, all claimed mileage by companies are on highways only. Correct. And about the rear space legroom and the seating space in back it is same as SWIFT. That means it is smaller than esteem space. If any one has doubt than chk and let me know. So any time Esteem(2005 and above) was better than Dzire(True for value). But unfortunately Maruti has discontinued the Esteem product so Maurti lovers dont have any other options. Please let me know if I am not correct. At (

feel good even after 8 months of driving dzire
Posted on 15 Mar 09 at 8:09 am

Pros Best the money can buy at 6.2lakhs

Cons rear leg room

This is in continuation of my earlier review.after 8300km in nearly 8.5 months, average after 2 servicings is 16-17kmlt in city and 20-22kmlt in highways with ac is the experience. Pickup and ride are excellent. Driven upto 120kmph on highways without any difference in feel and control. U cant ask for a better car at this price. But i repeat my earlier suggestion, the rear seat should have been foldable which even maruthi 800 has and rear leg room should be increased by atleast 100mm. I could fit in a bicycle in the rear of maruthi 800 with back seat folded and cannot do the same in dzire. Ofcourse the volume of about 400 lts is available in the dicky. Not spent anything on servicing so far. But one thing, the gauge of sheet used is appearing slighly lower since even a slightest of rub or touch on road leaves a noticeable mark dent.Better mileage doesnt come free. Overall feeling is still the best car bought at the price point of about 6 lacks on road.Dont forget the best and cheapest service of maruthi suzuki compared to any car in india
