Once the face of modern India and the country’s largest selling car, the Maruti 800 is losing its grip over the Indian passenger car market. Further, its engine doesn’t comply with the BS-IV emission norms which also means that the car is no more on sale in 13 major metro cities. In the wake of rising household income and stiff competition from Tata Nano, sales of the 800 have come down drastically. That said, the vehicle is still very capable of performing well for a typical Indian lower middle class family.
The looks of the 800 haven’t changed for donkey years and it continues to be sold in the same avatar. It is one of the smallest cars on Indian roads and the interiors too have the same look and feel. For four full sized adults, traveling comfortably in this car can be a task. The car continues to be powered by a small 3-cylinder engine that puts out just 37 Bhp. There is no doubt to the fact that the vehicle struggles to perform well with the air-conditioner on. On the safety front too, the 800 scores poorly and neither is the very efficient on the pocket as far as running costs are concerned.
Std BSIII: The 800’s cheapest variant is the standard model without an air-conditioner unit. At one time, this was also the largest selling variant of the people’s car. This version comes with only basic features like only one outside rear view mirror. Maruti 800 Standard is powered by
