Editorial Test Drive Review of Maruti 800

Maruti 800 which is the iconic little hatchback that was launched by Maruti Suzuki in 1983 and it has since sold more than 2.5 million cars till date. It was the best selling car until Maruti Alto overtook it in 2006. Maruti 800 is a household name in India. This small hatchback became famous for its low price, high reliability and low cost of maintenance and running. It was a major hit amongst families looking forward to buying their first car.Maruti has done an excellent job over the decades with its Maruti 800 hatchback. This little car is a household name now and has been the pride and joy of multiple Indian generations. Exterior wise you get traditional small headlamps and neat looking honey-comb grille adorn the front end of the car.

It’s a small hatchback that is well built and exterior fit and finish is a bit old and needs to improve though. Maruti over the years have made small changes to this icon and it looks its best now. Maruti 800 has the typical appearance of a hatchback car with a big front and big rear glass. The interior has seating for all of its 5 passengers which the car will seat easily. It has a simple yet very functional dashboard while the instrument panel is set in a cockpit shape. It comes with features such as air conditioning and heater, optional music system, mobile charging outlet, adjustable head rests. There are also storage areas for keeping small items in the car.The 800 has three cylinder 796cc petrol engine which produces a maximum 37 BHP at 5000 RPM and maximum torque of 59 NM at as low as 2500 RPM. It is mated to a 5 speed manual transmission and offers excellent drivability.

The car is a breeze to drive in the city and manages to do well at triple digit speeds. Maruti 800 Front design

Maruti 800 has a sloping front with rectangular head lights and a side door mirror on the right side

Maruti 800 Rear design

The earlier models of Maruti 800 had more edgy rear. Newer models have a more lifted and smooth and curvy with smooth edged tail lights in them

Maruti 800 Side profile

Rectangular headlamps are used in all models of Maruti 800. The illumination is not too good, but still it serves the purpose.

Maruti 800 Ground Clearance

Maruti 800 has a ground clearance of 170mm in all its models. The ground space is a decent one and offer good driveability in village roads.

Maruti 800 comes with black colored bumpers in all its models.

Head lamps have been the same. Rectangular in all its models.

Maruti 800 Tail lamps

Tail lamps in earlier models were rectangular and blunt. The new models are with more curvy rectangular tail lamps.

There were no fog lamps for solving out bad weather issues for better safety in car.

Maruti 800 Tyres

Maruti 800 came with 145/80/12 tyres. The radial tyres are optional in Maruti 800 in all models.

There are no alloy wheels in either of the Maruti 800 models.

Maruti 800 Outside mirrors

Outside mirrors are present on both the sides of the front doors of Maruti 800. The ORVM's are not body coloured.

Maruti 800 Colors

Maruti 800 is available in four shades namely: shiny and simple Superior White, shiny Silky Silver, the very popular and common Brick Red and navy -bluish Blue Blaze.

There has been no rear wipers provided in either of the models of the Maruti 800.

The roof-rails are not available in any of the models of Maruti800.

There was no such mechanized safety features included in the Maruti 800. Just the power and torque offered by the engine could give a comfortable and safe ride. No central locking system was there.
