Editorial Test Drive Review of Maruti 800

Maruti 800 which is the iconic little hatchback that was launched by Maruti Suzuki in 1983 and it has since sold more than 2.5 million cars till date. It was the best selling car until Maruti Alto overtook it in 2006. Maruti 800 is a household name in India. This small hatchback became famous for its low price, high reliability and low cost of maintenance and running. It was a major hit amongst families looking forward to buying their first car.Maruti has done an excellent job over the decades with its Maruti 800 hatchback. This little car is a household name now and has been the pride and joy of multiple Indian generations. Exterior wise you get traditional small headlamps and neat looking honey-comb grille adorn the front end of the car.

It’s a small hatchback that is well built and exterior fit and finish is a bit old and needs to improve though. Maruti over the years have made small changes to this icon and it looks its best now. Maruti 800 has the typical appearance of a hatchback car with a big front and big rear glass. The interior has seating for all of its 5 passengers which the car will seat easily. It has a simple yet very functional dashboard while the instrument panel is set in a cockpit shape. It comes with features such as air conditioning and heater, optional music system, mobile charging outlet, adjustable head rests. There are also storage areas for keeping small items in the car.The 800 has three cylinder 796cc petrol engine which produces a maximum 37 BHP at 5000 RPM and maximum torque of 59 NM at as low as 2500 RPM. It is mated to a 5 speed manual transmission and offers excellent drivability.

The car is a breeze to drive in the city and manages to do well at triple digit speeds. The engine has been tuned well and the refinement levels are very good this carmMaruti has finely tuned its suspension to absorb all the bad roads and provide a comfortable driving experience to its passengers. It has decent ride quality which cushions the bumps well. The noise and vibration levels are well controlled in this car and it’s easy to flick around in city driving conditions and provides adequate highway stability. The engine has been tuned well and the refinement levels are very good this car. It has been rated by ARAI to provide a maximum fuel efficiency of 16.1 kmpl. Maruti 800 Boot space	Boot space in models of Maruti 800 is 210 litres. The boot space is just sufficient to carry the necessary baggage’s while travel.
Maruti 800 Speedometer	There is a large dial type speedometer at the centre in all the models of Maruti 800. The speedometer is of analog type.
Maruti 800 Gear lever	The gear lever is of sturdy plastic and is not very smooth. The cost cutting is evident. The quality of gear lever is same in all models of Maruti 800.
Maruti 800 Cup holders	There are no cup holders provided in either of the models of Maruti 800 as it is a budget hatch and lack in these features.
Maruti 800 Glovebox	All models of Maruti 800 are equipped with a standard glove box. Glove box space is not much you can just keep the first aid kit and registration documents of your car.
Maruti 800 Audio system	Maruti 800 has no audio system and speakers in any of the models. The Maruti 800 is a budget car; therefore there is a compromise in terms of features available in Maruti 800.
Maruti 800 Air Conditioner	Later models of Maruti 800 include air conditioner. Though climate control option is absent in all of its models as it is a budget hatch.
Maruti 800 Arm rests	Arm rests are not available in any of the models of Maruti 800. The comfort and convenience features are big miss in Maruti 800.
Maruti 800 Air vents	Maruti 800 comes with 2 side and 2 centre air-vents to ensure proper cabin cooling in car.
Maruti 800 Seats	The seats are not luxuriously fabricated. Though they are equipped with manually adjustable head restraints. The seats can be sided for more comfort. These are bench type seats that can comfortable seat only four people.
Maruti 800 Leg room	Front legroom in Maruti 800 models is of 1130mm and legroom for rear seats in 790mm
Maruti 800 Knee room	Maruti 800 has got slightly less knee room in rear and when 3 passengers sit in rear seat, it becomes little congested.
Maruti 800 Shoulder space	Maruti 800 shoulder room is also in the lesser side and it becomes slightly uncomfortable when three people sit in rear room.
Maruti 800 Head room	Head Room of Maruti 800 is low and it becomes a problematic when a tall person sits in car.
Maruti 800 Steering wheel	Maruti 800 has a two spoke steering wheel. The steering wheel is not comfortable and is of sturdy plastic. Leather wrapped steering wheel is not available in any of the models of Maruti 800.
Maruti 800 Power windows	There are no power windows in either of the Maruti 800 models. Maruti 800 lacks in the comfort and convenience features in all of its models.
Maruti 800 Keyless entry	No keyless entry system option is provided in any of the Maruti 800 models. There are no anti-theft features available in any of the models of Maruti 800.
Maruti 800 Driver information display	Driver information system includes speedometer, temperature gauge and fuel gauge in its all variants. The Maruti 800 lacks in distance to empty, mileage display and other features.

Maruti 800 Handling Braking & Safety

The 800 does not have many safety features and is starting to show age. The handling is good though as it feels nippy around corners and it is very easy to drive in the city and park. Steering is light and the small size of the car help in this aspect too.

Maruti 800 Handling	4-speed manual gearbox gave a better handling along with Macpherson suspension.
Maruti 800 Braking performance	The Maruti 800 comes with front Disc and rear Drum brakes. The braking performance is good and ensures safety of the occupants.
Maruti 800 Safety features	There was no such mechanized safety features included in the Maruti 800. Just the power and torque offered by the engine could give a comfortable and safe ride. No central locking system was there.
Maruti 800 ABS	ABS is not available in any of the models of Maruti 800.
Maruti 800 Traction control	No traction Control system present in any of the models available in Maruti 800.

Maruti 800 Mileage and Running Costs

The engine has been tuned well and the refinement levels are very good this car. It has been rated by ARAI to provide a maximum fuel efficiency of 16.1 kmpl which is good and the overall running cost of the car is indeed very low and the cost of ownership is also low.
