Hyundai launched the new i-Gen i20 on March 28th 2012. The new car which was designed on the lines of Hyundai’s new ‘Fluidic’ design language replaced the first generation i20 which was being sold in India. The exterior dimensions of the car are similar to the outgoing model. The fluidic family design from Hyundai has given the car a fresh new look, doing away with the more dated design of the old version. With the i20, most of the Hyundai cars available in India now have the corporate fluidic look. The new i20 is loaded as the top-of-the-line Asta (O) which comes packed with all the creature comforts that a modern petrol-head needs. A digital read out on the dashboard and in the instrument cluster, a fully-automatic climate control system and in-car-entertainment with USB, i-pod connectivity. The new i20’s best-in-class wheelbase allows for an airy cabin with ample space for the average urban family.

When it comes to engines, the i20 has two engine options, the petrol is a 1.2 litre Kappa petrol engine under its bonnet. The in-line 4-cylinder engine with Dual VTVT puts out 82 bhp of maximum power, for which you need to rev the engine to 6000 rpm while 113 Nm of torque tops out at 4000 rpm. Being a petrol engine, you do need to rev it up as it lacks low-end grunt. That said, work the smooth shifting 5-speed manual gearbox as well as your right foot and you will be greeted with a very refined four-pot orchestra emanating of course from the engine bay.The other petrol is the 1.4litre Gamma with 4-speed automatic transmission which gives 100 bhp. .... read more

Hyundai i20 Interiors

The top-of-the-line Asta (O) which comes packed with all the creature comforts that a modern petrol-head needs. Since, we are on this topic, let me give you a low down on features list. The model we tested had ABS with EBD, EPS, electric ORVMs with turn-signals and power windows all around. Six air bags included the curtain air bags on the driver and co-driver’s side. A digital read out on the dashboard and in the instrument cluster, a fully-automatic climate control system and in-car-entertainment with USB, i-pod connectivity. There is a rear view camera as well. The new i20’s best-in-class wheelbase allows for an airy cabin with ample space for the average urban family. The seats get new fabric in a dark shade of brown which go well with the darker two-tone dashboard.

What we like
The new i20’s best-in-class wheelbase allows for an airy cabin with ample space for the average urban family. The features list is very long also!
What we don't like
The design of the interiors have not changed over the earlier i20.

Interiors Details

Boot space

i20 is one of the most spacious hatchback models in the Indian market it has about 370litres of boot space.

Speedometer

The new dials and the digital fuel and temperature gauges between them look really smart.

Gear lever

Hyundai has re-introduced that nasty, shiny chrome gearlever that looks really cheap.

Cup holders

i20 has cup holders both at the front as well as at the rear of the car.

Hyundai i20 Front View

The exterior dimensions of the car are similar to the outgoing model. The fluidic family design from Hyundai has given the car a fresh new look, doing away with the more dated design of the old version. With the i20, most of the Hyundai cars available in India now have the corporate fluidic look. That said, the i20 does look familiar from the sides as well as the rear. Move towards the rear end and the tail lamps have got new reflective elements whereas the actual shape of the lamps remains the same. The rear bumper is new and the front one gets triangular fog lamps on the top-end variant.

What we like
The new look at front is new and looks handsome.
What we don't like
The rest of the design looks pretty much the same.

Exteriors Details

Front design

Enough has been done, at least to the snub nose, to make the i20 look refreshingly new. Those blistered headlamps, for example, give it a very Volkswagen Scirocco-like look and the slim grille, deep front bumper and muscular chin all work well in making the i20 look even more attractive than before.

Rear design

The rear too has hardly changed with just new tail lamps, a slight re-profiling of the bumper and a new spoiler to indicate this is version two.

Side profile

There has been no major changes at the side except the chrome in the door handles.

Ground Clearance

The ground clearance of 165 mm makes the i20 a comfortable ride for the Indian roads.

More

Now, the i20 has three engine options, the petrol is a 1.2 litre Kappa petrol engine under its bonnet. That said, work the smooth shifting 5-speed manual gearbox and you will be rewarded. TheThe other petrol is the 1.4litre Gamma with 4-speed automatic transmission which gives 100 bhp. This one is more powerful obviously but the automatic saps power a bit. The diesel is a 1.4 CRDi which makes 90 bhp. This one has lots of torque and enough performance, it is easy to drive in city and you do not have to constantly shift gears.

What we like
The Kappa 1.2 is peppy but the diesel is our choice due to its strong performance.
What we don't like
The 1.4 is not that different with the 1.2 Kappa petrol in terms of performance.

As far as handling is concerned, the i-Gen i20 isn’t the best car to throw around corners at a high rate of speed. The car does suffer from quite a lot of body roll, courtesy of the softly sprung suspension setup. The tyres don’t help much when you try to be a bit aggressive with the car. Basically, this car wants to be driven sensibly and that is what those living in crowded cities would do most of the time. Like other Hyundai cars, it is well loaded with lots of safety features like six airbags including driver airbag, side & curtain airbag. It has also ABS with EBD.

What we like
The i20 has lots of safety features and has good braking performance.
What we don't like
The handling is not as good as the earlier i20 as it has a too soft suspension.

Handling Braking & Safety Details

Handling

Feeling of refinement is the re-tuned suspension. Gone is the old cars low-speed clunking over irregularities and this suspension is far more sophisticated in the way it tackles bumps in the city. Thats not saying Hyundai has got it fully sorted out though. Go faster and its obvious that the car has lost some of its high-speed manners. It feels terribly sloppy if and when you have to change lanes quickly and the steering wheel feels like it just might be connected to the front wheels.

Braking performance

I20 uses ventilated discs in the front and drums at the rear the braking performance of the i20 is good.i20 stops from 80-0 Kmph 27.09m in 2.37sec.

Safety features

The major safety features of the i20 include ABS (Anti Lock Braking System) with EBD, PAB (Passenger Airbag) onoff switch, multiple airbags and many more.

ABS

i20 has an option for ABS in the car.

Traction control

i20 has no traction control for the car.

Macpherson struts adorn the front while gas-filled shocks at the rear give the car a more pliant ride. Now, Hyundai has always concentrated on giving its customers a better ride which in the city comes as a boon. The electric power steering is well weighted and perfect for driving around tight spaces. The turning radius too is pretty decent. The i20 soaks up bumps pretty well and is also refined and well insulated.

What we like
The ride is improved now over the earlier one.
What we don't like
The ride quality is still not class best.

Comfort & Suspension Details

Comfort

The rebirth of the i20 is sure to re-define the mid-segment luxury level. With features like Rear Parking Camera with display in the cabin, Supervision Cluster, Fully Automatic Temperature Control, Clean Air-Cluster ionizer for fresh air in the cabin, it proves to bring in a new wave in the A2 segment. The smart key with push button start adds to the features of the car. It is also loaded with premium features like Multi Information Display, 2-DIN CDMP3 Audio System with 4 speakers and 2 twee

Front suspension

i20 uses Independent, MacPherson struts at the front which helps it to overcome almost any potholes on the road.

Rear suspension

i20 uses Non-independent, torsion beam at the rear and it makes sure that passengers at the back are comfortable in any kind of roads.

Other Hyundai Cars

Good looks but not liked by many.

Pros space, features

Cons less powerful engine, big dash board, Price

Guys about the i20 the base varient Magna is pure value for money. 4.79lacs exshowroom price with music system, adjustable seat n steering, electronically controlled rear view mirror and much space in the dash borad, power windows. Where do u get all these stuff in other cars. Its a bit more priced than Swift VXI. But only point I doubt is i20 is 70 kilos heavier than swift and with 1.2 litre which is used in i10 too. So finally its lot more heavier than i10 and the engine is the same. So what happens to the mileage and pickup of i20. I really doubt the mileage will be a drawback in i20. Rest all is good. Magna is priced very attractively. And resale of hyundai is always less than marutis. This is also to be considered.

i20 Vs Rest Segment C Hatches
Posted on 28 Oct 09 at 12:39 pm

Pros Gr8 Styling, Comfort, Features of Segment B Cars not to miss awesome interiors

Cons Cut on the Back seat, Asta n Higher versions not value for money at all

Guys, Have been researching for about a month now on various hatchbacks..i pen down on Two 1) I 20 2) Ritz well if u want a value for money car, go for RITZ but if u dnt wanna compromise on style..class..with beige n brown classy interiors..go in fr i20...she be a babe..i decided on RITZ first..but after i sat in this hatchback couldnt get my eyes of her. Although u campromise on power(for milage,in Magna)but its might be worth for its class n Panache. Not to mention its one of the safest car in this category. the car competes with Jazz n Fabia in interiors. Jazz definately better in terms of styling performance n class, only if u ready to burn a big hole in your pocket. Fabia however comes with better quality of plastics n interiors..but the basic version doesnt even have power windows( major set back). i was quiet surprised tht its not at all close to value for money as skoda begs for maintainence even after spending so much. another setback for i20 would be the delivery time. as it takes about a month to deliver the baby. More time of a month and a half in colors other than white and silver. but dude, if u buying a car for the next 5 years, its worth the wait...so faar so good...lets c how this babe performs on the road..as its been only 6 months on road..shall keep u posted on any new updates on this babe as n when i play with it.. Keep Burning the roads, till then. Nikhil Wadhwa

I bought Hyundai i20 Asta (Diesel) on 23rd September, 2012. I have gone through a very bad experience with this car
since I purchased it. Look and features wise, it is O.K. but ground clearance is very poor, especially in hill areas.
