Expert Test Review

Side View of Datsun Go

UPDATED: Read detailed roadtest of the Go (click to read)

Datsun, the low cost brand of Nissan, is making a re-entry into the Indian car market after decades. Their first product for the country is the low cost hatchback, the Go. The company claims they have invested years into making this car, which is the perfect Indian family car at a price point. The Go, to be made in the sane Nissan factory in Chennai, will be sold through existing Nissan dealers as well.

The Go competes in the Rs 3-4 lac hatchback segment and comes across as a car with fresh design ideas. It is not striking or funky in any way but yet looks smart and young in the company of cars like the Santro, WagonR and the Alto range. The Go is a substantially big hatchback too and has good road presence - for example the huge grille up front and the distinctive Datsun logo at both the ends. The car is long though not very tall and 13-inch wheels do look small as compared to the body. Datsun is playing safe and will offer only 4 color models to choose from.

On the inside, the Go is one of the more spacious cars in the segment. To start with, Datsun has done away with 2 bucket type seats up front and offered what seems more like a one piece bench arrangement. For this, the gear lever and hand brake lever had to be re-positioned - it does make sense as the Go feels really spacious up front and further, a couple can even snug in close and sit in a cosy manner! That said, features are missing - we did expect a day-night internal mirror, internal adustable outside mirrors, cup-holders, vanity mirror etc. Overall fit and finish however is on par with the rivals. At the back, things are again basic with no power windows, no rear speakers, no cup / bottle holders or even a parcel tray. The boot is massive and completely outshines the rivals in this regard. .... read more

One of the biggest USP of the Go is the engine - Datsun hasnt cut corners here and it comes with the same 1.2-litre engine as seen in the Nissan Micra and the Renault Pulse. Power is down from 76PS to 68PS (same as low cost Micra Active) though torque remains same at a very healthy 104Nm. This 3-cylinder motor has further been tweaked for better economy which now stands at a rated 20.6kmpl. There is no automatic option on offer and the 5-speed gearbox feel spot on for this engine. To cut costs, NVH levels have been sacrificed and the car does get very vocal when pushed hard.

On the ride and handling front, the Go plays very safe. Big windows add to the airy feel and also aid in visibility - its a fuss free car to drive in town and on the highway and the suspension does its job pretty well, better than most of the rivals in the segment. Steering isnt very light but on the good side, has enough feedback at high speeds. Talking of highways, push the car hard and it will easily do serious triple digit speeds, thanks to a bigger heart under the hood.

The Go packs a lot of punch. However, its a low cost car and this is evident - a single reverse light, omission of features, no safety options et al. However, Datsun has done its homework and knows the Indian consumer very well. Pricing is always the key to success and we expect the base "D" version, without air-con and power-steering to start at Rs 2.99 lac, extending to Rs 3.5 for the top of the line "T" version.

The interiors of the Datsun Go are extremely spacious for it's segment. Although, fit and finish and quality of plastics could have been better.

Gr8 Family Wagon 7-seater car

Cons ,-

Lahori Nissan Launches Datsun Go+ @ 3.79 lacs One of the most awaited family cars Datsun Go Plus was launched today at Lahori Nissan in Jammu. Datsun has re-invented itself in India as an affordable value for money brand with the Go hatchback. This is perhaps the first ever compact MPV model in the automobile market with a capacity to host at least seven passengers. The company has designed this vehicle on the Datsun Go hatch body platform, which makes it look quite identical to the hatch. Mr. Pawan Gupta, Director, Lahori Group on the launch of the car stated that seven-seater family size cars are much more in demand in India which offers space as primary factor. Its capacious interiors with pure affordability make Datsun Go Plus a perfect car to drive on. The popularity of seven seater cars is closely followed by the increased preferences for these products. The Go Plus has taken the brand values even further by offering a compact family wagon at an even compact price, asserted Mr. Prinkle Mahajan, Managing Director, Lahori Nissan. The new Datsun Go plus benefits from its highly competitive price, maintenance costs and better fuel efficiency, all this without compromise on driving experience. It is the Datsun Go+ that aims to target the ever so lucrative MPV space with a different categorization and price. Therefore, creating an entirely new segment better known as Compact MPV the GO+ aims to provide more style, more seats, better power and more practicality. The mill has been re-tuned to benefit the increase in size and weight and it works brilliantly in its new avatar as well. The engine is quite refined and it pulls well from the start till the red line. Mated to a 5 speed transmission, in the GO+ the 2nd and 3rd gear are really tall which is convenient for both city and highway use. Specifying the features of the car on the occasion, Operational Head, Mr. Yesh Paul quoted that this particular MPV is easy to handle on open as well as congested roads. Its brakes work well courtesy ventilated discs towards the front and drum at the rear. He further added that they are overwhelmed with the response generated so far through their dealerships and outlets in Jammu, Srinagar, Kathua, Udhampur and Leh. Lahori Motors have always relied on ensuring and providing good sales and after sales service and will continue to do so in the future.

Good first car for the Indian family
Posted on 5 Sep 14 at 1:12 pm

Pros Fuel Efficiency,Comfort,Space!

Cons Average Interiors,Lack of features

No I dont own the "Go" but recently took a test ride while picking up a car for my friend. Let me start with the dealer experience - the salesman knew what he was talking about and the test drive lasted more than we wanted - no issues over there. The car now - it doesnt look something that can be called WOW but certainly has a big car feel. Color options are nice but no alloy wheels even on the top end. Interiors While the space is really good in the Go, you miss out on features and that premium feel. Its a practical car no doubt but not something I would love to be in on a daily basis. That said Indians love a big boot and this has it! Engine and economy While the engine felt peppy when we drove the car (even with four people and AC), it did feel very noisy. The gear shift was rough and noise insulation bad. We dont need a quick car Datsun, we need a noiseless one ) Overall, its a big step forward in the segment and gives more to a customer for his money. All the best to Datsun for this new car

Slightly excellent 1200 cc .

Pros Great Looks,Fuel Efficiency,Comfort,

Cons Average Interiors,

When you drive this car which offer you mix millage of 18 km l in city + highway. Car is specious & with this price i don't think we will have 1200 cc engine . Car is having good grip on curved roads with high speed in line with CG is well balanced.I don't know about future maintenance, but worth buying this car at this moment . constraint is noisy engine due to 3 cylinders.
