The newbie in the Cheverolet India Family is soon to enter the spheres - Its the first General Motor car that is completely built in China. General Motors showcased the concept version of the Sail in the Shangai Auto Show 2005. Since then the car had a huge hype.
It was early this year, that the car got launched in China in the entry level sedan segment. The good sign for India was - General Motors confirmed that the car would be exported from China to all other Countries and being the close neighbour, the car is eagerly awaited. The car is highly anticipated in India.
Cheverolet Sail is built on the same platform on which Opel Corsa was built, which was earlier sold by GM in India. The car follows the new age Chevy design - the high lift face is similar to that of Cruze and Aveo.
The car is avaialble in both petrol and diesel option.

Expert Test Review
The interiors of the Sail look well- built and it offers enough space and good storage space. Expect features like Bluetooth and USB to be offered.Moreover, it is a modern day car, engineered recently and this should reflect in the way it drives and pampers the passengers. It has ABS with EBD and airbags in the safety features department. For India as there are harsh summers, even the AC compressor has been upsized and that will be appreciated for sure. Overall the changed interior for India suits us a lot.
The Chevrolet Sail U-VA has a boot that is as large as 1134 liters.
The Sail U-VA gets a speedometer in the center of the instrument cluster with a digital readout and tachometer on either side.
The gear lever is well positioned and gets beige trim.
The Sail U-VA comes with 25 different storage spaces including cup holders.
The glovebox of the Sail U-VA is very capacious.
The LS ABS and LT variants get factory fitted audio system with 4-speakers and Bluetooth capability.
Manual air-conditioning is standard on all models of the Sail U-VA.
The Sail U-VA does not get arm rests except for those on the door trims.
Air-conditioning vents are not provided for the rear seat passengers.
Seats are wide, comfortable and supportive.
Legroom at the rear is decent for average height passengers.

Driver information display
Driver information display on the Sail U-VA provides most of the necessary information about the car's auxiliaries.
The Sail however will change all that as it features a more modern looking design and a seems as a much better package as well. It easily overcomes the biggest shortcoming of the U-VA, ie, the looks.The Sail has a dual-port grille and looks handsome but it’s not futuristic looking, rather a safe design but something that will appeal to all. As you can see from the pictures the Indian version has a strong dose of chrome to make it more up-market and it will work as we love chrome!
The hatchback design of the Sail U-VA with a raised profile liberates enough shoulder and head room inside the car. The front end features the classic Chevrolet split grille with the bow-tie logo in the center.
Twin-vertical tail lamp cluster and an almost featureless rear hatch looks different yet suits the profile of the car.
The raised rear quarter of the car along with an aerodynamic profile looks decently proportioned. The car has clean lines along its sides
The petrol variant has a ground clearance of 174 mm unlike the diesel which sits slightly lower at 168 mm.
Front bumpers get fog lamps neatly tucked into the contours.
The Hawk Wing style headlamps offer good visibility thanks to optimized reflective surfaces.
The vertical tail lamps sit right at the edge of the rear windshield.
Fog lamps are housed in the front bumper with defining lines that go along with the design.
The Sail U-VA rides on 17570 R 14 tyres.
The top-spec models get 14 inch alloy wheels. The wheel size is 14 x 5.5 J

The Sail will be under 4 metres in length which means it will enjoy the tax benefits given out to small cars in India. On the engine front, the Sail will come with both petrol and diesel engines. The petrol engine is is a 85 bhp 1.2-litre unit. The diesel engine is the now famous Fiat sourced 1.3-litre Multi-jet unit. The diesel develops a healthy 77 bhp at 4000rpm, it’s smooth and has good low-end grunt. The model has been tuned and changed to suit the Indian market which will definitely appeal to the customers.
Engine & Performance Details
Chevrolet Sail U-VA has a very good in-gear acceleration and has well spaced out gears
Both variants of the Sail U-VA come with a 5-speed manual transmission.
The petrol variant of the Sail U-VA produces 86 PS @ 6000 rpm while the diesel engine puts out 78 PS @ 4000 rpm.
The petrol engine churns out a torque of 113 Nm @ 5000 rpm while the diesel puts out 205 Nm @ 1750 rpm.
The NVH levels in the new Sail are good though some noise does seep into the cabin but that is only to some extent
The 1.3 l SMARTECH Turbocharged Diesel Engine with superior torque promises a mileage of22.1 kmpl. The SAIL U-VA is also available in a 1.2 l SMARTECH Petrol variant giving you 18.2 kmpl. Plus Chevrolet is giving a brilliant warranty package.

The ride of the Sail U-VA is comfortable and it is sure-footed. There is less of the firmness and it is much more comfortable and better equipped to tackle potholes. The refinement though especially from the petrol was average and it sounds a bit thrashy.
Comfort & Suspension Details
Thanks to the modern gas filled shock absorbers, the Sail U-VA offers a very decent and comfortable ride.
The Sail U-VA gets Mc Pherson struts with passive twin-tube gas shock absorbers in the front.
The rear setup on the car includes a twist axle along with passive twin-tube shock absorbers.
